When I moved to Kalama, Washington in 2003, I was lucky to hook up with a few inspirational artists ~ Marie Wise being one. She and I have shared many meetings and meals, discussing art as a craft and art as a business.

My family left Kalama in 2009, and Marie and I have continued on our artful paths. Last week, we met up again in Longview, at the Lord & McCord Art Works Gallery where 6 of my paintings are showing for the month of October.

Marie is represented by the gallery next door to Lord & McCord: The Broadway Gallery. She allowed me to photograph her with her artwork at The Broadway Gallery, and I'm honored to feature her here.

Bari Tessler Linden ~ Conscious Bookkeeping ~ Video Courses

Good morning ~
It has been interesting around here with school starting for the boys, and me: revving the business up while the little ones are away ~ then frantically shutting it down when it's time for that school bell to ring!

But everyone is happy here, and I take cautious care to make sure of that on a daily basis. Taking the time to look into those boys' eyes to make sure they are feeling good. If they are off at school and not feeling good ~ there is NO way I can feel good working in the home studio/office.

Well, I don't know about you, but I always love to come across something new that I feel is a good use of my time.

You know how you can just *tell* when something or someone you discover is worth your time, worth your exploring?

You know how you can tell when you actually *want* to sign up for an email newsletter, and you don't feel like you'll be fed a bunch of junk you don't need?

Over the years (many, many years) I have had an uncanny ability to recognize when someone who enters my life is supposed to be there. Be it for a reason, a season or a lifetime.

I literally stumbled upon this woman yesterday, and with the urge to write a post for you that was informative and inspiring, the pieces locked into place instantly.

I was sent an email from Handmade Success ~ including Bari Tessler Linden's 7 Money Tools and I felt the urge to click through.

Spinning Tales Prepares For Russia

Here is a tribute to her ~ as she prepares for her trip.

It's beginning to look a lot like...

My boys decided today ~ September 24 ~ that we must have a Halloween party ~
and we must begin preparing ~ NOW!

So, we spent hours in the studio today, painting grave stones, skeletons, pumpkins and...
well, I painted Frankie (in 7 minutes). I most love their skeletons, though!

Frankenstein ~ a 7 minute speed painting of the spooky green man himself. My boys said to please paint him "sorta realistic, but not too scary".

I think these new creations, Halloween party or not, will have to become staple decorations around our house every Fall.

Procrastination: Inspiration from Jurgen Wolff

I am honored to receive a monthly update from Jurgen Wolff ~ it is one of few emails that I actually read and re-read, vs. toss. Here is what I felt most inspired by from Jurgen's most recent note:

Put the Zeigarnik Effect to work for you to overcome procrastination

PsyBlog.com recounted that while in a restaurant, Russian psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik noticed that waiters remembered orders only until the customers had been served, then they forgot them. She did some lab tests that showed that people who were interrupted during a series of tasks remembered more of the ones they completed.

The upshot is that when you start something, it stays in your mind until you finish it. If you don't start it, you find it easier to put out of your mind.

The implication for procrastination: start the task you're avoiding. Even if you do just a little, that will keep it on your mind and make it more likely you'll return to it.

ACTION: If there's a task you've been avoiding, spend five or ten minutes starting it today.

4 Paintings From The Past | Free Cards Winner

Recently, while perusing my folders and folders of completed paintings, I came a cross a few that I hadn't looked at in awhile. And I felt the urge to show them to you.

Tenderness, 2008 ~ I really love this one, it caught my eye as I hadn't seen it in awhile :)

Origin, 2007 ~ there is something about her posture that I like. I may play with this pose again soon.

Sentinel, 2007 ~ this was created for a doctor, a gift from the clinic's receptionists and nurses ~ to shed light on, and appreciate his protective nature toward his young patients.

Lyrical, 2008 ~ I worked on this painting while tending my booth at a holiday art fair in November 2008. To see it makes me feel Christmas-y :)

These original paintings have all sold, but I can make prints of them for you, if you like. Let me know if you'd like an archival, signed print in either of the 3 following sizes: 8x10 for $17, 12x12 for $29, or 13x19 for $54.

Well, there is a little blast to the past for you ~ I created these paintings back before I really knew what a blog was, and before Facebook was even in my vocabulary.

Here is the process of Sacred Space:

This painting sprung out one night after lying with my 5 year old in his bed. Just like this. As he fell asleep, I had a thought: "there is no place I would rather be right now".

I'm really enamored with her expression ~ it's one of bittersweet acknowledgement of her child getting bigger and bigger, more remarkable, and taking on a mind of his/her own. And that child? Perfectly adorable, in my opinion.

Artful Bliss ~ August 2011 ~ Portland Oregon

The paintings display beautifully at New Day Center for the Arts in Portland, Oregon. The show will come down during next week.

It was another one of those cheek-aching evenings ~ where I got to meet and visit with many new people. I know it is a good event when my cheek muscles ache from smiling within the first hour.

My buddy, Liz Ness of Liz Ness Studio ~ mixed-media artist/painter/tech-guru!

Each painting has a story ~ and we've included the stories with the paintings ~ visitors to this event remarked on how they loved to read the thoughts behind the pieces ~ the intentions.

Linda offered Xocai Chocolate samples, Kirsten shared her activity book for children, and Liz and Myself shared our artwork. It was a lovely evening with delicious treats, conversation, and music in the air.

Visitors enjoyed the songs and stories of Portland's own singer/songwriter Mila Polevia

Our ample supply of varied hors d'oeuvres were well enjoyed ~ especially by the children who danced around and played throughout the evening.

I had the opportunity, during this event, to meet Currie, and present to her her completed commissioned painting, Over The Moon.

During our event, a special adjoining room allowed children to create their own art ~ thank you to Kirsten Klug and her family for making this possible.

It was an evening worth sharing ~ and I hope those who came and shared had a wonderful time. Thank you to Kerri Altom and Kayt Huggans for photography

One Year Ago While Painting Motherhood: The Great Studio Re-Do

Buttons & Magnets: A Fun New Inkling | Free Cards Friday

I love creating art ~ I love touching people’s feelings, inspiring moments and making folks think and remember. I LOVE it. It is my passion.

I love seeing my paintings used to create inspiring and purposeful items. I am a minsumer; which for me refers to the fact that I am not a big buyer, a big consumer. I purchase things that really speak to me, but I spend most of my money on healthy produce and art supplies so I can feed my family and my passion. I also spend on the creations of my those whom I admire, with an intention of someday having walls adorned with beautiful and thought-provoking story-infused art.

I do not love mass consumerism, I do not love multitudes of cheap-o things created just to sell, with no thought for the process of creation, or they whom created it. I struggle with this on a daily basis: supporting my family (healthy organic produce can get spendy) but at the same time creating conscious products on my own. It is indeed a daily struggle, but I know I am not alone.

Since I DO love to create things, I love handmade. The handmade movement inspires creation by hand while infusing the love and attention of the artist. We, as buyers, get so much more that way!

It is because of this careful and mindful nature that I am very cautious about how my artwork is used. I choose not to have it manufactured in ways that I cannot support and when I am unable to know the ins and outs. There are some control issues in play here, as well, but mostly, my instincts strongly suggest that I keep it as close to home as possible; keep the creation as close to the studio as possible. In the same way I like to fuel my family with foods as close to the earth as possible, and as close to homemade as possible.

This is where I am, right now, in my thinking and my life.

Today, I’d like to share with you my newest fun little inkling ~ these cute little buttons and magnets. They are 1 ¼” across, sweet and lovely.

Yes, he’s 5, but he’s my baby.
Yes, he’s 5 ½ actually, but I’ll jump at the chance to rock him in the eve ~ to hold onto that little boy-ness as long as he’ll let me.

Yes, he may be one of the only big boys in his kindergarten class to have asked to fall asleep against mama’s breast tonight ~ but I affirm he’s one lucky boy to have a mama who says Yes.

Simple Living ~ part 1 ~ just a toe in the waters

For years and years, I have been wondering if there were others out there like me ~ others who wanted less, not more. Less items, less things, less stuff. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to be nomadic, to have just what fit in your car, and nothing else. This idea has excited me for years.

But a home brings things, and a business brings things, and being an artist brings supplies and canvases in various stages of completion. And now, being a mother and wife ~ both bring their equipment as well. All have made my simplification urges harder to fulfill. But I love to nest, so twiddling away at clutter control is perfect for me.

Quite awhile ago, I began searching online for people who share this feeling ~ I had heard of packrats, shopaholics, hoarders ~ and even clean-freaks and neatniks ~ but I wasn’t getting enough personal information online about people that seem to have a strong adversity to clutter, people who, since childhood, would get the sweats and dizzy-ill spells if they spent too much time in a department store (like I did).

I searched online but always found the opposite of what I was looking for. I have visited hundreds of homes over the years, and (at that point) had yet to find someone as freakishly intent on sharing this desire.

These tendencies are far from debilitating ~ they are invigorating. Each time I find something not needed anymore, I am cheered. Happy to give it to someone who can put it to good use. The local charities have been fond of us over the years. Each time a toy breaks, I toss or recycle it, happy to have one less thing in the home (but don't get me started on cheap-o toys, that's a whole 'nother conversation).

It wasn’t until I stumbled upon the Circle Of Simplicity and began studying Voluntary Simplicity, that everything began to make sense. I began to view myself as less and less of a weirdo and more and more as a piece to a puzzle.

My obsession had found a purpose, and that was refreshing and offered so much promise.

Fellow simplifiers, I know you are out there!

A Gift Of Space

There are so many things we’d like to do, things we’d love to learn and try, do, and say we’ve done. Not to mention tasks to accomplish, errands to run and places to stop. And what about all of those extra-curricular activities?

Many of us have been nurtured to fill up space, lest we feel worthless or lacking in use. Packing our schedules with things to do all day, then classes and workshops, sports, retreats and clubs to fill our evenings and weekends. As adults, we are sometimes prisoners to this schedule, apparently trained early on that a spare schedule equals a boring or unfulfilled life.

I personally wonder if what our children miss is more than they gain when we include them in our scrambles and sign them up for every interesting activity that comes along – creating their very own pint-size rat races.

What do we teach them, really, when we drag them around, seemingly seeking one stimulus after another, packing the space and time?

It seems in this modern time, many of us fear what children might do if left alone with a block of free time. And how do we give them this time when there are so many things to sign them up for? Play dates, lessons, camps… What will other parents think if we can’t compete in the pissing contest that consists of whose child did more on spring or summer break?

Yikes. It all makes my head swim. I was recently informed by a mother that she is truly concerned because her daughter is not in any social activities yet ~ and she is “almost 2!”

I have different ideas of how a two-year-old child should be spending her time and it involves mama’s hip, blankies and books ~ not dance and art classes. I don’t think I’m alone on this. :)

I have a family in my past whose parents filled every hour of time from the end of school til the (late) bedtime of their children ~ worried for what they might ‘get in to’ when left to their own devices, in their own child-created spaces.

I fear that our tendencies to pack our children’s lives are leading them toward lives of pure discontent as young adults.

I recently watched the 4 neighbor children out my window while working in my studio. My husband had taken our boys to their grandma’s house to visit for a couple hours, and I had some time to paint as the warm breeze filtered through my studio window. The children on the lawn across the street enthralled me. I found myself feeling, first and for only a few moments, how they might be bored, as they sat around in the grass. They spend every weekend (and most of the summer) doing just this – laying and playing.

Very quickly, however, I realized the wisdom in their (lack of) activities (I stopped painting to watch them), and I was truly enchanted and informed by the way they pushed each other around in a big vacuum box; the way they carefully played with their stuffed animals, conversed with each other, and chased around on bikes and roller blades. All on a piece of lawn that is surprisingly moderate in size.

These children were growing up the way I grew up ~ free and easy, allowed to be children. They are not rushed (neither was I and neither are my boys) to and from activities in some parental fascination of just how much can be crammed into a day. They understand what if feels like to be bored, and on the flip-side, they do not fear boredom. They know how to occupy themselves creatively and in ways only children can imaginatively come up with.

What if we gave our children an entire weekend to bum around in their jammies and do whatever strikes their fancy? What about boredom and letting them experiment and build their own internal toolbox of ideas and creations to keep themselves busy?

What if, instead of placing the most value on learning some extra-curricular skill, or competing in some way, shape or form each day, we placed more value on giving our children the skills to get along with their siblings after school; the nurturing goodness of a family dinner around the table each (or most) night(s); the comfort and strength of not only togetherness, but solitude.

What if we emphasized enriching the ability of children to make up their own games and be responsible for their time; the value of helping around the house, hanging out on the front porch with friends, and reading on the lawn.

Maybe I’m justifying the fact that I honestly feel one of the greatest gifts I can give to my boys is the Gift Of Space. Space in their schedules and in their days. In our family, the skills learned through family time, setting the table, helping with dishes, finding something to do, sharing stories, and general interpersonal relationship strategies outweigh filling up each afternoon with activities outside the home.

The bottom line for me stems from the world’s devastating need for healthy family relationships.

I am asking questions because I am not entirely certain of the answers, I know how I feel in my heart, but I do not mistake the fact that every family/child is different. It is possible that my Gift Of Space could also be called old fashioned, lazy or selfish. But my two best-friend boys are really happy, creative and inventive and I have only heard “I’m bored” from one mouth, one time, in one year.

Some of my early work (before I became a mother) consisted of birds and trees, eggs, flowers and the life of nature in general. As my first son began to grow, my interests turned to creating artwork based on nurture, protection and closeness.

When I began creating Day Dream, I found myself tapping into those wild branchy detailed nests from my past ~ and pairing that nest with the smooth, pearly infant from my current work.

He or she is the egg; is the future; the possibility; and nature in general.

Day Dream was the second painting created for The Forty Minis Collection, and is currently the ONLY ONE of 40 paintings remaining as available for purchase.

A year or so ago ~ I was following a fellow young woman artist online and she mentioned how someone had her artwork tattooed upon their body. I was so surprised and just couldn't fathom the idea! I thought it was pretty cool.

Deep inside, in my tiny internal voice, I felt that I might someday find my artwork used in such a permanent fashion ~ but only because the wearer truly loves and relates to the image.

Recently, Erin in Winnipeg, Canada has asked permission to have Merchild emblazoned on her arm, and with the addition of a lotus flower ~ I think it is SO beautiful, and I am SO honored. Thanks Erin!

Spreading mother-love around the world ~ what more could I possibly ask my paintings to accomplish?

Free Cards Friday ~ Back to Solo-Working ~ Maintaining Healthy Habits

It has been 9 years since I started my “official” business (graphic design and illustration) in my home office. And it has been just over 7 years since I’ve worked alone in the home office. Our oldest son is 7 years old.

For the first 2-ish years of my business, I was a total workaholic. My husband would leave before 730am and I’d hit the computer ~ where I’d stay for 9-10 hours. I was building a graphic design and illustration business from absolutely nothing and enjoyed every minute of it. I was a working machine: a cold-calling, researching, note-taking, client-seeking, book-scouring machine (at least until my hubby got home and I had to rip myself away to prepare dinner). And in the eves, I’d work some more.

We lived a beautiful one-half-mile walk to the post office and library ~ but refused myself the opportunity to go. We had a lovely deck out front where lunch could be comfortably taken and enjoyed ~ but didn’t do that. I was lucky to grab a quick something for lunch, then take it to my office.

One year on my birthday, I told myself I’d take the day off. Then adjusted it to taking ½ the day off. Then found myself with outrageous self-assigned goals to complete before going to lunch with my mom: 15 cold calls, etc, etc. Boy.

I was a total workaholic. But I’m not complaining. I loved it. I felt that if I strayed from my office, I may get sidetracked, or I may not get enough accomplished to suite my shocking expectations. My guess is that my current feeling (though annoying and wrong) that if you are sitting at the computer you are working (when truthfully you could be totally wasting time) blossomed around this time.

Well, later, our little boys came along and I had some serious adjusting to do ~ but I did adjust, and I loved my years spent wrapped up in baby boys ~ and the rest of the story is… well, too long to explain right now.

Looking back, one of the things that I don’t love about how I treated myself in my past solo-working days was the fact that I didn’t take proper meal breaks. I suppose I would slap together a pbj and eat it at the computer. But today, a pbj absolutely doesn’t constitute a meal in my mind. As a matter of fact, anything pressed between bread slices doesn’t work for me now.

I still can’t believe that I didn’t take the time to have a nice relaxing lunch break on one of my three beautiful decks…

My purpose here, though, is that TODAY is the first day in 7 years that I get to work in my office/studio alone all day. My littlest boy started Kindergarten today.

It is bittersweet but we are all doing well ~ he is happy (they are both happy) and that is ALL that matters to me. I am basing my emotions on the emotions of my two sons. If they are happy and excited ~ life is good.

And if they are doing well at school then I am even more fueled to rock and roll in the office and studio while they are away. Everything I accomplish during the day (in home and business) makes the afternoons with them that much sweeter.

The crazy thing about accomplishment though, is that even though I didn’t chain myself to my computer from the get-go today, I made amazing progress. In this, my FIRST day back to solo-working...

(It’s not about staying in the office or parking your butt at the computer “working” all day, is it?)

Within 1.5 hours of gently handing my son over to his Kindergarten teacher this morning, I had gotten a short-fast walk in (while shipping 3 orders) and a bit of grocery shopping done. I had cleaned two bathrooms, transferred and folded 1 load of laundry, dusted the living room and cleaned the breakfast dishes and the kitchen.

Then I got some work accomplished in the studio, at the computer. And when my body said it was time to eat, I didn’t ignore it. I fixed myself a big salad.

It was a gorgeous one too: with spinach and romaine, roasted almonds, hard-boiled egg, dried organic cranberries, kalamata tapenade, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and avocado. Lots of avocado.

And I actually photographed my lunch. Boy :)
(Don't get me wrong, I love food photography and the inspiration it provides, but I had just never done it before) :)

TODAY is the start of something new. And while I have burgeoning expectations for how much I will accomplish for the business (which is now over 90% art-related, vs. design) I have every intention of keeping true to my current healthy habits. That means exercise, fresh air and proper meals.

And I suppose at some point, if/when I decide I’d like to eat bread again, I will be happy with a big hearty salad pressed between bread slices. Hold the almonds.

Remember when I was trying to decide which local mother & child organization to donate a portion of sales from The Expanded Visions Collection to?

I've decided to contribute to the Northwest Mothers Milk Bank (I’ve actually had them in mind all along).

The Northwest Mothers Milk Bank's mission is: To collect, pasteurize and distribute donor human milk to meet medical needs.

The Northwest Mothers Milk Bank is saving the lives of babies and changing the lives of families. I am honored to have $130 for them, so far.

Why do we need a milk bank in the Northwest?
Currently, US milk banks cannot meet the need for donor milk. The closest milk banks are in San Jose, California and Denver, Colorado. This can mean increased transportation costs and time and occasionally limited availability when providing donor milk to our area. Oregon and Washington have two of the highest breastfeeding rates in the United States with the potential to have sufficient breast milk donors to serve infants throughout the Northwest region and other parts of the US. A committed group of volunteers is developing a human milk bank to serve the Northwest.

What is a Milk Bank? (from the NWMMB website)

A milk bank screens, collects, processes and dispenses donated human milk as a community service, providing human milk to babies whose own mothers cannot supply the milk to meet their baby’s needs.

A milk bank is also a resource for health professionals and the general public in the uses and benefits of human milk, the standard in infant feeding.

The Northwest Mothers Milk Bank has been designated a "Developing Milk Bank" by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. HMBANA members meet strict standards for screening of donors and processing of milk.

There are currently eleven milk banks serving North America. Milk Bank locations.

Painting Motherhood In Review: Home

HOME has become one of my signature pieces ~

she has helped to define my purpose, and has served as a valuable icon for what I am out to do.

Here is her story:

The first cassette tape I owned was Billy Joel's - Innocent Man - I nearly wore it out. I still have that tape and have ever since I was a little girl. It's beat up and dusty and I don't even own a cassette player!

Billy Joel's (older) music has always moved me and several seem to be written just for me.
One in particular (playing as I write this), "You're My Home" contains a message that speaks to my heart.

"... when you touch my weary head

and you tell me everything will be all right

You say - 'use my body for your bed

and my love will keep you warm throughout the night'

...Well, I'll never be a stranger

and I'll never be alone

wherever we're together

that's my home..."

Throughout the last couple years, Home has taken her place in my fair sign, my website banner, my Facebook welcome page, my Online Etsy shop and Facebook page avatars. Her simple monochromatic form has also become the inspiration for two commissioned paintings (at client request) over the years.

The Original Painting of Home sold right away, after completion.

Free Cards Friday ~ Chunky Original 4x4 Paintings ~ what fun!

On my mind for years now... has been the idea of creating tiny originals. I've flirted with the idea, and at the advice of another artist, set the idea aside for a couple years, thinking is may not have been a good one.

Recently, at a craft store sidewalk sale (we just stopped to get a canvas, but ended up with much more!) I spied these little canvases and the idea came flooding back.

This idea is also related to my urge to create beautiful products, while stumbling over the option of whether or not to license my work (I've been on that stumbly path for years). I am working on the full story behind my "licensing" thoughts, to share with you in the near future.

These little paintings allow me to produce hand-painted, artist-created, straight-from-the-studio original pieces ~ that hang right on a nail (without a wire, actually) ~ or would love to be propped on a tiny easel.

Granted, they are priced higher than prints created by someone elses mother in China...

This is what I want, deep inside ~ to create work that is actually created in-studio, by the artist (hence my previous mention of my licensing stumble).

In general, I find myself inundated with natural instances of inspiration, and more than anything I’m aching for time to get them all down on paper or canvas before they flit away…

If you hang out with me in person, you know my journal is always in hand, and I annoy myself, even, with my need to capture sketches, thoughts and words on so many occasions.

Spirit Soul & Sweetness ~ Today's New Painting ~ Event Tonite!

As the LAST PAINTING for The Expanded Visions Collection, I am honored to present Spirit, Soul & Sweetness ~ the FIRST painting where I have added the written word to a painting.

All of my life, I have been writing, and collecting my writings, poems, stories and blurbs, painting titles, phrases and tag lines. I have been wanting, for a couple years now, to find a way to incorporate the words into the paintings ~ to give a glimmer of my thoughts behind the work ~ a glimmer brighter than the title can provide ~ and to be present when the painting's statement was not around.

With Spirit, Soul & Sweetness, I really felt a need to include words.

I was able to clip paper directly from my journal, write in my own handwriting with my trusty drawing pen ~ and adhere the text, scumbling paint around and layering transparent tones over the paper ~ welcoming that little slip of paper right into the world of the image, making it feel necessary, making it appear natural.

I have done this just once now, but I can already tell that a new door has opened to me, and conquering this fear will lead to additional fears to be conquered. How fun.

Sneak Peek at Spirit, Soul & Sweetness ~ Adding the Written Word to Paintings ~ Tomorrow Night's Event

It is time for The Expanded Visions Collection to come to a close. I am honored to end the collection with Spirit, Soul & Sweetness ~ the last painting in The Expanded Visions Collection, but the FIRST painting where I have added the written word to a painting.

All of my life, I have been writing, and collecting my writings, poems, stories and blurbs, painting titles, phrases and tag lines. I have been wanting, for a couple years now, to find a way to incorporate the words into the paintings ~ to give a glimmer of my thoughts behind the work ~ a glimmer brighter than the title can provide ~ and to be present when the painting's statement was not around.

My concerns were that the words would appear “stuck-on” ~ that is, if I could even find a successful way of attaching the words. I was worried about adding a typed font, and was unsure as to what to call my painting medium once I added something other than paint... Yes, I can be a worrier.

I now realize that it DOESN’T matter!! I’ll just do it and the rest will work itself out.

Ache ~ rough with a smooth message... an available 8x8 painting

In May of 2009 ~ Ache came to be ~ she spent a couple weeks in my head first ~ tethered to me by her title. A title made up of a word representing something that I often feel when thinking about my boys. My boys whom had previously needed me and my body in order to live ~ my boys who stretched me and pushed me ~ pulled me both physically and emotionally.

The act of being a mother and literally feeling my heart on the outside of my body everyday, leaves behind an ache. It does now, and it did in May 2009.

Ache was a part of the 85 8x8s for $85 Collection ~ a collection started in February of 2009.

She sold right away to one of my favorite collectors.

HOWEVER! Recently, she has come back into my studio as my collector decided to trade up to a larger painting ~ which means Ache is available right now.

Now that she is back in my possession, I was tempted to refine her ~ she could do with some smoothing, I suppose ~ but her rawness is what speaks to me most now ~ her emotional honesty, her complete carved-out passion for nourishing her child.

I find myself unable to edit her, wanting to leave her as she was first born. Her purpose had intent, and her message still does.

I have currently struggled with fighting the urge to refine my paintings too far ~ and I desire to leave them in their abstract, honest and rough states ~ the way they came through me onto the canvas.

Ache will stand as a painting that, as the artist, I view as one of my most raw pieces. Rough and honest.

Ache gelled for a time ~ one day, I was working on a different painting when the composition for Ache suddenly sprang out ~ I switched canvases immediately. Ache is a word I use to describe my feelings toward wanting my boys to stay small forever, yet longing to see who they’ll become ~ yet knowing that when they are grown, I’ll ache for these young years again... My heart does flip flops when I get into this vein of thought, and I’m reminded to focus on the now.

Come To Me ~ PART THREE (final) ~ The story of her presentation to Russian Musician Diana Arbenina in Russia on July 8, 2011

A couple months ago ~ I was contacted by a very kind woman in Russia ~ she and a large group of her friends wanted to commission a painting for the Russian musician, poet, singer and songwriter Diana Arbenina. Together they were a group of devoted fans. When I first perused the photos I was sent, I was captivated with Diana's power, emotion, intensity and natural beauty. I was increasingly inspired to paint her/for her.

My new friends fully enjoyed Diana's July 8, 2011 concert, then patiently waited back stage to present Diana with her gift. Here are some images of the concert:

Ksenia (whom has been my kind and sweet contact throughout this process) waits back stage with her friends to present the gift ~ which has been re-stretched onto new stretcher bars in Russia, after travelling over as a rolled canvas in a tube. See the Part Two Blog Post ~ featuring the preparation of this painting to ship to Russia.

The moment Diana sees her gift of Come To Me!

The painting Come To Me, being presented to Russian Performer, Musician and Poet Diana Arbenina after her concert on July 8, 2011 in Russia.

This painting was commissioned by a collective group of Diana's devoted fans, we worked together through email conversation to create a piece that would signify Diana's power, poetry, emotion and heart ~ and the love and protection felt by her for her two young children.

During the video, Diana is being told that she is being presented with a large collective gift made possible by many fans, and created by American artist Katie m. Berggren whose themes are motherhood and family.

I am told that Diana was completely surprised and pleased. Diana says that her daughter (left, in the painting) looked just like that on the ultrasound, before her birth. Everyone laughs!

At the end of the video, Diana tells her fans that she is planning to introduce her children to the public in the Fall ~ and they are assuring her that she need not hurry :)

This devoted gathering of fans & friends even created a proper booklet to present to Diana with her gift ~ detailing my studio, my purpose and statement, and my thoughts behind Diana's painting. I was tickled to receive a pdf copy of this booklet, which included a two page spread showing everyone who was involved in the gift. I couldn't stop staring at all of the faces who had come together to share love.

Art in the Heart is downtown Vancouver’s annual festival of the arts. This outdoor event takes place on First Friday, August 5th from 5 – 9 pm and again on Saturday, August 6th from 10 am to 4 pm. Creativity in all styles and mediums is the theme of this event! There are many galleries in Downtown Vancouver, each gallery will have artists set up outside along the sidewalk and in the streets. You will have a chance to buy lots of great artwork in a wide variety of styles and mediums and talk directly with the artists!

Free Cards Friday & Come To Me ~ PART TWO ~ The story of her Preparation for arrival in Russia ~ a gift for Musician Diana Arbenina

Removing the staples and the spline.

In order to ship Come To Me to Russia, she had to be removed from her wooden stretcher bars so that she could be rolled and safely shipped via express mail.

In general, I sign my paintings on the left side of the stretcher bar, on the back. In this case, I autographed, titled and dated the back of the canvas. So that when re-stretched in Russia, this painting would always bear my mark :)

The painting is rolled (image side out, to prevent cracking) and wrapped in cotton paper. To the right you see the free print that accompanies commissioned paintings.

Wrapped around a 2" tube, and placed gently inside a 4" tube, padding for each end, and lots of tape and love. These details made Come To Me's safe arrival in Russia possible :)

Come To Me ~ PART ONE ~ The story of her Creation for Russian Musician Diana Arbenina

Together, we wanted to create a piece that would signify Diana's power, poetry, emotion and heart ~ and the love and protection felt by her for her two young children.

Here were my thoughts on the sketch, and my intentions for Diana's painting:

"She is strong and beautiful, real, honest, emotional and intense ~ yet tender. She encircles her children with her arm in the forefront, yet keeps her distant arm on her own forehead, which here represents keeping her hand in her passion for her music (plus, I noticed she pushes her hair back a lot during performances). Her children are protected and enclosed by her front arm ~ protected from the public and very close to her heart. Her hair is a bit wild in the back to represent life and hard work ~ the chaos and business of music/fame that she seems to be protecting her children from (I couldn’t find anything about the twins online, which I personally think is a good thing)."

Though Diana's 2 children (twins) were over a year old at this time, she had successfully kept them from the public eye, thus, we worked from a photo of Diana on stage one year before, holding photos of her children.

It took us several tries to successfully finesse Diana's lovely & trademark nose ;)

"It is hard to imagine how things can be connected! I don't know if we told you that Diana's children were born in the USA, and now you, #1 Motherhood Artist in America, created a beautiful piece of art for her and her family. Moreover, when I talked to Diana about USA, she said that she really loves Oregon (and, especially, Eugene), and you live in that area. These coincidences are truly amazing!" ~ kind words sent over by one of Diana's fans

Diana's painting ~ completed. The group of fans in Russia were very happy with the painting, as am I. I took some time to listen to Diana's music and read the translated lyrics before deciding to call the painting Come To Me. A particularly beloved song by Diana is titled Come To Me.

After I sent my suggestion over via email, to call the painting Come To Me ~ my client emailed back so excited to share with me that Diana's upcoming concert (at which they were planning to present the gift) was titled Come To Me. It was as if it was meant to be :)

Confluence Winery ~ Artists In The Vineyard | Free Cards Winner

This past weekend I was a part of the Confluence Winery's Artists In The Vineyard event ~ and I loved it. Yes, there were times of quiet, there were several hours of rain, there was cold (I'd forgotten my coat)... and then there was the cat who sprayed my tablecloth right from the get-go :) ~ but I did truly love it.

I strongly feel that the people with whom we spend our time can really influence how we look at the world around us. And so I had a very good time at this event ~ nestled amongst horse fields, grape vines & winding country roads. Thank you to artist Greg Gorham for inviting me.

The owners of the lovely Confluence Winery were kind and thoughtful ~ and I had my friend and fellow artist Susan Williams to chat with at times. The live music drifted throughout, and though the visitors were not always swarming, the ones who came to talk with me in my tent were warm and conversational ~ and interested in the pieces. Several original paintings found new homes this weekend, including From The Same Cloth ~ who will now dwell within the family's home at the Confluence Winery.

This was the first event where I opened up two sides of my tent, and the flow-through was great ~ allowing for browsers ~ and a little space for me to sit and paint, off to the side.

Inspiration books were a hit ~ and were displayed at this event in the actual box from my studio where I keep my writing notes!

I brought a pre-undercoated canvas to this event, hoping I would have some time to do some demonstrating. On Saturday, I was looking into the canvas, contemplating what should/would be painted there and one of my buyers walked past again ~ with her expectant belly and her little boy perched on her hip. I was instantly struck with what I wanted to paint, and launched right in. I will share more of this painting as time passes ~ as a matter of fact ~ it will be released this Thursday as a part of The Expanded Visions Collection.

My two faithful Art Fair girls ~ Ratha and Carolyn ~ they come every year to see me at this event, and we always have to get our token photo :) Thanks Ratha and Carolyn!

This lovely mama and I could not believe the similarities and how perfect Something Beautiful seemed to fit her and her sweet little girl. She took one look at this piece and said "that's US!" Needless to say, she is hanging it in baby's room :) Thanks AB!

This event was so fun ~ and as always ~ the rockin' music, the wafting smells of good food ~ the energetic conversation and rumble of visitors left me feeling perfectly happy. It is usually after an event, when I get to see so many buyers face-to-face, that I am reminded of *why* I do what I do ~ that I do it not only for my own meditation, sanity and passion for creating ~ but for all of the mamas out there... and I have met some touching and inspiring mothers.

Art & Wine Event This Weekend! English Estate Winery ~ Vancouver WA

I am honored to announce I will, once again, participate in the English Estate Winery 2011 Art & Wine Fair coming up Saturday July 9 (11-7pm) & Sunday July 10 (12-6pm).

This is such a fun event each year, with catered food, wine tasting, a variety of arts and craft vendors, demonstrations, as well as live music & summer happiness billowing about.

Families and children are welcome!

Personally, my big white booth offers prints (in three sizes!), glass pendants and charms, cards, original paintings, demonstrations, and friendly conversation. And this year there will be autographed books, as well!

Recently, I was reading Pam Leo's Connection Parenting book ~ which is amazing ~ and more than once Pam referred to (and recommended) Mitten Strings for God, by Katrina Kenison. I checked it out and from the moment I opened the cover, I was literally struck by the fact that this woman could be me ~ it literally felt like looking into my future at writings that I would someday put down on paper. This woman thinks JUST like me, I thought ~ and she writes in a beautiful, emotional and flowy way that I aspire to.

I have never felt such a connection to an author through their published words.

Every time I have had a chance (I still am holding onto this book despite the fact that it is overdue at the library, oops) to read a few pages, I am so relieved with the way I am raising my boys. Quietly (well much of the time), comfortably, focused on health, home and togetherness (and errands, too, of course).

I emailed Katrina to let her know how I felt about her sweet book and she responded and offered to send 2 free, signed copies of Mitten Strings for God to my readers. How generous! Let's do one now, and one later.

Free Cards Friday ~ Grounded With Wings

A recent painting for a valued client ~ Grounded, With Wings ~ touched me in a way other paintings haven't.

The sketch and words that began the process, and the last couple weeks required to complete the painting were the strongest ~ it was as if I was offered the guidance to begin, then left to my own devices for awhile, then followed by another pull to complete it just 'so'.

A mother and her daughters ~ moving through life together. Each an individual ~ yet each daughter eagerly similar to the mama whose fierce determination and passion they admire.

Here is her process:

In regard to the little face in the lower left: I could not seem to get her skin tones to work for me... Those big eyes kept looking at me and I could not seem to please them ~ nor did they please me. I then realized that it was because the facial structure was incorrect that the skin was never correct. A change there (wipe out) and the skin came together effortlessly. These paintings have a mind of their own sometimes... I tell you :)

Free Cards Winner ~ A School of Fish... at school!

My stepfather is a devoted and creative teacher at Yacolt Primary School in Yacolt, Washington. I went to school there, in the tiny town where my friends and I rode bikes to buy ice cream ~ and played in the woods ceaselessly. Some of my favorite memories revolve around that tiny town...

From my stepfather's creative impulses, in 2007, sprung a student-made mural ~ a fail-proof way for children to incorporate their art into their school, without the chaos of 60 children huddled around a mural with brushes and cups of paint... scary.

The children at Yacolt Primary School watch salmon grow in an indoor aquarium ~ a science lesson ~ and an inspiration to create a true school of salmon ~ cascading over the walls of the communal area between the classrooms ~ the "pod".

Throughout my life, those close have redeemed the value of having artists in the family ~ my three siblings and I have all followed an artistic path ~ and we have been blessed with many opportunities to use our art to please and entertain while helping those we love.

(Yacolt Primary still utilizes a big wooden "Choices" wheel that I painted... urk! too many years ago to count!) Believe it or not it hangs in the main entrance of the school, and while it facilitates children in coming up with a good choice for how to deal with conflict, it brought back many memories for me ~ struggling with paint and skin tones, when I was just a young gun. Seriously, despite the threads of embarrassment, I'm honored to see it hanging there.

Earlier this year, my 5-year old and I painted one of the many wooden salmon that my stepfather jigged with his saw, as a donation for the school ~ a little piece of us that we could set free onto the walls of the pod ~ a bit of me that can live in my past forever. You can see our painted fish here.

Last week my brother (and great friend and painter ~ in from Sweden!) Kevin Conrad and I had the opportunity to oversee and facilitate with my stepfather as the 20 chosen 2011 Fourth Graders painted and completed their salmon.

My little boys (my littlest shows his newest creation, above) came along and wowed with their ability to sit and quietly paint for 2 1/2 hours (I wasn't surprised, only proud) ~ my littlest one felt proud enough to walk his fish around a bit, showing the older children.

Watching these 9 & 10 year old kids paint and finding inspiration in their freedom and lack of baggage was wonderful. Encouraging them and finding tiny teachable moments within the moments of paint and markers on wood was heart-warming. Many of them have such potential and I relish the fact that so many of them realize their potential ~ with confidence and spark. I sent off silent hopes for them to remain in grasp of this confidence and creativity. And encouraged a few to keep going and keep drawing ~ to not let others "scare" it out of them.

In truth, that is one of my biggest and only fears for public schooling ~ at least at our top notch school ~ is that creativity, intuition and spark might be less than honored and nurtured.

The finished fish were great ~ and they soon joined (within a few days) their friends painted by students-past within the great school of fish ~ on the walls of the pod.
